I just got a Clearwater II 864-4 as a replacement for a Clearwater I 905-4. It's a REALLY nice rod. I was particularly impressed with the cork and finish. The action is really sweet and smooth and as long as I'm not trying to throw size 6 bass bugs my range doesn't suffer. I've overloaded mine with 5wt line and I think it throws a nicer loop than my Z-Axis 906-4. Hard to beat that Orvis warranty too. My 905-4 had a few bubbles under the snake guides so I sent it in. With no extra charge or fuss they shipped me off a new rod (i requested the 864-4) and I had it within a week.

I'd recommend a glass rod as well for light line use. Examples include new Lamiglas Spring Creek, used Scott/Diamondglas/Steffen, vintage Phillipson/Fenwicks/Orvis.

Do not rule out the cortland brook series, they have a nice slow casting tempo and are great trout rods.

I do like my st.croix avid 3 weight though, and i think the st. Croix is a very good rod for the money.

The TFO finesse is a true medium action rod, but casting at any distance is difficult.

Best of Luck Fishing

My favorite rod right now is my Avid 4wt. I love it.
