Default Winston Boron IIX and Orvis T3 opinions

I am seriously considering a lifetime membership in TUC (Trout Unlimited Canada). To sweeten the pot, TUC is including a 4 piece 9 foot Winston Boron IIX or a 4 piece 9 foot Orvis T3 in your choice of 4, 6 or 8 wt rods.

I am thinking maybe an 8 wt for bones or perhaps a 4 for trout. I live about 3 1/2 hours from any kind of hands on wiggling of these rods so I likely will have to choose sight unseen. I am curious as to what opinions board members might have on these rods.

Thanks for any and all replies.

Guy

Hi Guy,

The Winston cost $170 more than the Orvis T3. I would take the Winston also.

I do own both. I have the TIP FLEX 9.5 T3 4 piece 6 weight. I later bought the BIIx 6wt......NO COMPARISON! The T3 is stiff right to the tip, but the BIIx has a sweet spoy at the tip. Soooooo much nicer to cast all day. I ended up buying the BIIx 8 weight also. It feels like casting a 5 weight. Such a joy.

I still fish the T3, but is I was do it again...I probably wouldn't have given the T3 a second look. It has it's place for sure, but the BIIx can cover that and more.

Put some Windcutter II or Sharkskin GPX and you will be unstopable!
