Default George Varney Bamboo Rod

Ladies/Gents

I bought this rod at an auction almost 20 years ago and am curious about its apx worth. I am not interested in selling the rod, too many great memories associated with the purchase.

This rod was made by Montague after George went to work for them and at the time it was their signature rod as it has George Varney's name on it and it is the finest Montague that I have ever seen. The name is stamped at the top of the reel seat and there is no writing on the bamboo. I would guess it to be an 8 or 9 wt 3 piece rod with extra tip.

Both the tips and the stripping guide are red onyx and the line guides are bugle style. The rod has sets of 5 wraps about every 1.25 inches all the way to the tip.

Sounds nice David,

Pictures?? Are there any letters on the butt section like HGH or HEH? The red rings in those guides is a type of agate and went into the flagship rods dressings.

Had a look with the big magnifying glass and saw nothing on the butt. It has fine knurling around all of the metal parts and a patent date of Mar 4 90 on the first ferrule.

Also just above the reel seat where the makers mark is stamped it says "George Varney maker Montague Mass". Perhaps this rod was made prior to his going to work for Montague??? I don't know.
