The St. Croix Avid is built much better than the Triumph (which is an import).

The St. Croix avid is a good rod, as is the launch. I don't think you could go wrong either way.

I really don't like reddigtons...

Well a couple people have mentioned the Orvis Clearwater II series so I thought I'd chime in. Last season I bought 2 906-2 Mid 6.0 models as client rods. I've fished them my self quite a bit and think they are very good rods for the price. I bought the mid flex since they are primarily client rods. I need them to accomodate a wide range of casting styles. Had I bought them for myself I would have gotten the Tip 9.5. The Mid 6.0 is a very easy casting rod, has no troubel throwing any thing but my largest and heaviest streamers. Casting 60ft with dries of any size is no problem.

Now the rod alone will eat most of the money you are looking to spend. The combo will run you over budget by about 100.00 with tax. but the combo does come with rod, reel, backing, and line. Also the Clearwater II series does come with the Orvis Guarantee. Orvis has never asked questions when I've brought a rod in for repair. Just take it to the dealer or any orvis dealer, they send it in for repair and call you when it comes back. No charge!!! This and the quality of the rods is why I only fish orvis anymore.

If you're looking for an all around trout rod- I saw some 9' 5wt Echo Classics on eBay recently that is easily the best $100 rod I know if. (I think some were more like $60)

For a better small stream rod, I'd look at the TFO Finesse 7'9" 5wt.

St. Croix has altered their Avid series less in recent years, but they've recently revamped their Imperial series. They're a bit cheaper, and I'm fairly sure they're built here and have the same warranty as the Avid.
