Default Winston WT

I've had my eyes on Winston's Joan Wulff 5wt for a while. Am interested in hearing from anyone who has spent time fishing one about how well it handles small streamers. I have a 5 wt that handles dries thru heavier streamers so I don't need it, but I just like this rod and think I want to get one just for something different (and classic). I know the Biit is similar and would do a better job w/ small streamers, but the biit isn't the Joan Wulff WT. I would plan to use it for dries, small soft hackles, and size 10 or smaller streamers.....or maybe just dries......does anyone have feedback on the 5wt WT?

I've seen the JWF in person, but didn't hold it. Winston's website says that the JWF has a grip designed for a woman's physiology. The WT is available in an 8'6" 5wt configuration with a regular grip, but I'm assuming you're a guy.

Frank,

Blue Dunn is Mary so you might hear from her on that point but that isn't why I am posting.

Mary, aka Blue Dunn,

What is the "biit" on this rod or is that a typo? I'm serious, I've never heard of that and am asking.

Ard

Rats, my cover has been blown! . Just kidding!........my name has been linked w/ my screen name on quite a few forums...hopefully not all of them are bad!

Biit = BIIt - Winston's slower version of their Boron rods. I think more people know of the faster BIIx.

I am a big Winston fan and have a WT but not in the JWF version. You will find the medium flex and I mean true medium flex does not have a lot of tip strength when casting a lot weight. The rod will tend to break down during the cast and create a loop in your delivery. You can cast these rods with streamers but they made fast action rods for a purpose.

You will not find a better casting rod for dry fly fishing in my opinion.

See what happens when one assumes?

I don't like large grips at all, and I have LARGE hands. The JWF might be just the ticket, and I believe Joni has one. I don't know about the thumb indentation, however. I'm not a thumb on top caster, so it would be worthless for me.

I believe this rod is identical except for the grips to the 8 1/2 5 weight 3 piece WT or the "staff of Moses" as we like to call it up on the Ausable. Mine handles small streamers and cone head Wooly Buggers just fine and large Drys up to a Brown Drake. In fact it has far more reserve power then the 9 foot B IIX 5 or 6 weight. It's a real versatile rod.

Mary,

Send a PM to Joni; she has a JWF (or she had a JWF). At one point she said it was not a lucky stick for her, but overall, I think she liked it.

LOL! Interestingly, I catch myself making the same assumption about other forum members!

The Staff is the 5 wt? For some reason, I thought the 4 wt was considered the Staff of Moses.

That's right - forgot that she has/had one.

She still has it. For life. I'll tell her.
