Salmon and Steelhead Fly Swap, Spring 2011
We just had a few tyers in this one. Each tyer tied 12 flies (plus another 12 bonus flies from Nerka) to be divided up among participants. Participants either tied multiples of a single pattern or a few flies in each of several patterns so each tyer got back 12 flies in return.
Many thanks to the participants! by ChrisinselwynNZ http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0854.JPG by ChrisinselwynNZ http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0856.JPG by ChrisinselwynNZ http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0857.JPG Mickey Finn by Nerka (Chris tied up a bunch of this pattern and the one below for each tyer) http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0859.JPG Hook: Heavy wire "Russian River Streamer Hook" Gamakatsu 141109 size 2 Rib: Oval tinsel Body: Silver tinsel Wing: 3 layers of bucktail: Top yellow bucktail over middle layer of red bucktail over bottom layer of yellow bucktail by Nerka http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph.../IMG_08581.JPG Hook: Heavy wire "Russian River Streamer Hook" Gamakatsu 141109 size 2 Thread: Black Belly: Pink bucktail, tied under hook and long Wing: Chartreuse bucktail topped with Krystal Flash Blue Charm by Aroostockbasser ( Brent tied up a bunch for each tyer) http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph.../IMG_08601.JPG Hook: Salmon size 2 Thread: Black Tag: Fine flat silver tinsel Rib: Fine oval silver tinsel Body: Silver tinsel Beard: Silver Doctor blue hen Wing: Gray Squirrel tail fibers Head: Black Ally's Cascade by peregrines http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0807.JPG Hook: Salmon size 4-8 (Mustad size 2 here) Thread: Black 6/0 Tail: mixed orange and yellow bucktail and copper Krystal Flash Rib: Oval Silver tinsel Body: Rear 2/3rds flat silver tinsel, front 1/3 black floss (Unistretch floss here) Wing: Black Bucktail and Pearl Krystal Flash Collar: Yellow rooster hackle behind orange rooster hackle Head: Black Dusty Miller Hairwing by peregrines http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0824.JPG Hook: Salmon (Tiemco size 4 here) Thread: Black 6/0 Tip: Fine silver tinsel followed Tag: Yellow floss (Unistretch floss lacquered here) Tail: Golden Pheasant crest Butt: Black Ostrich herl Rib: Gold oval tinsel Body: Rear half, silver tinsel (embossed silver tinsel here), front half orange floss (Unistretch floss here) Beard: Green highlander hen Wing: Mixed red, yellow, orange and chartreuse calf tail under mixed tan and rusty brown calf tail Head: Red Copper Killer by peregrines http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0831.JPG Hook: Salmon size (Tiemco 7999 size 6 here) Thread: Red 6/0 Tip: Copper tinsel Tag: Yellow floss (Unistretch lacquered) Tail: Golden Pheasant red breast feather Butt: Red ostrich herl (Salmon Steelhead red dubbing here) Rib: Oval copper tinsel (copper wire here) Body: Copper tinsel Beard: Orange hen Wing: Tail hair from Red Fox Squirrel Head: Red Silver RAT by peregrines http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph.../IMG_08171.JPG Hooks Salmon hook size 2-10 (Tiemco 7999 size 6 here) Thread: Red 6/0 Butt: Gold oval tinsel Tail: Golden Pheasant crest Rib: Oval gold tinsel Body: Flat silver tinsel (embossed silver tinsel here) Wing: Gray Fox guard hairs Collar: Grizzly hen Undertaker by peregrines http://www.theflyfishingforum.com/ph...6/IMG_0829.JPG Hook: Salmon size 2-10 (Tiemco 7999 size 8 here) Thread: Black 6/0 Tag: Butt: Chartreuse followed by red (Unistretch floss here, lacquered) Rib: Fine oval gold tinsel ( gold wire here) Body: peacock herl Throat: black hen Wing: Black bear or black squirrel as used here. Re: Salmon and Steelhead Fly Swap, Spring 2011
Those are some good looking flies. Thanks Mark for coordinating the swap! Thanks also to everyone for participating. I am looking forward to throwing these at the salmon up here. If I manage to land fish on any of them I will let the tyers know. Back during the winter swap, Mark tied up some stone fly nymphs with a bit of orange in the head. I hammered arctic grayling on them.
I can see Sockeye, Chinook, and Coho all chasing a few of those patterns and Humpies chasing them all. Kudos everyone. As for the ones I tied, I used Russian River legal hooks. In case you ever come to AK to fish, you will be legal on the world famous Russian River. Normally I would throw a wrap of .035 lead on most of my salmon flies, but on that river they must be unweighted. So keep in mind that any weight like split shot must be 18" above the fly. This is generally a sight fishing place, so I added a bit of flash to the flies as much so the fisher can spot the fly and strip it accordingly towards the sockeye heading up stream more than anything. If you have questions or advice on how to improve the flies let me know. |

Nice looking flies!
I missed this one, but I'll be back next year if you do another one of these Salmon/Steelhead swaps. Bring on those pics, Nerka! Pocono |
