Cancel the black gnat. I still want to tie, but typical gnats are sized 14-18 and tonight I spent about 5 minutes getting a size 14 out of a blue's gullet.

He seemed no worse for the wear though.

I think I'll find something larger to tie. Will let you know.

I've knocked out half my flies, the nighttime hopper. It's of my own sort of creation, it's like a lot of standard hoppers that use a deer hair underwing but instead I wrap some black hackle in the body segments to give it a buggier look and push some water.
For the legs I use a black ruber and tie them with four strands, and leave them long to create more surface disturbance, all of this plus black foam with a wee little pink spot on top to see in low light!
