Re: Winged Wet Fly Swap
Dave - you can tie any winged-wet pattern that you like. And novices are always welcome, it's a great way to get your practice tying in, share with other tiers and then see a bunch of patterns from your peers.
I think did that tie-along, was it with Pocono? Allan is a superb tier and really understands those classic patterns. I would highly recommend the novice tier to use his tutorial. Plus if you run into a problem and post a question on that thread, someone will probably come back and help you out.
One bit of caution, traditional winged wets with matched slip wings i.e. Leadwing Coachman are not a novice tie. It definitely takes some technical skill. But don't let that stop you...just be forewarned! I am not very good at it and would probably have to tie 20 to get a dozen good ones. Which is why I am tying a diving caddis - it is technically a wet fly with a wing, but wing is simply a feather hackle. Look at a bunch of patterns and find a winged wet that looks like something you can handle. And have fun, these swaps are great for learning new patterns, old patterns, techniques...I love em!
