Finally got some time to tie up some flies.
Hook: #12 Tiemco 100
Thread: Lemon beige Pearsalls gossamer
Wings: Wood duck flank
Tail: Grizzly hackle barbs
Body: Homegrown Labradoodle hair
Hackle: Mix of grizzly and barred ginger
I'm not a particularly skilled or consistent tyer, so bear with me. Here's the process:
I use Pearsalls gossamer because it looks so good when wet. Any beige thread will do.
Part of what makes this a Gray Doodle
rather than a Gray Fox is that I can't manage a thin tail, and my mutt has a bushy tail.
I use wood duck flanks for the wings, but if you want to tie a darker fly Teal flank feathers work well.
My least favorite part of this tie is splitting the wings.
Here you can see the Labradoodle dubbing body. It's such a nice and buggy dubbing material.
Here's the hackle tied in, with the ginger nearer the tyer, and the concave side facing the camera. I give each of the feathers 2 wraps behind the wings and 4-5 in front. These bad boys are gonna float.
The finished bug; just add a drop of head cement. The wings are probably too long on this one, but I figure they can be trimmed in the field if needed (this is due to the lack of consistency I mentioned earlier).
Here's the whole group. One can color the backs with brown sharpie if one wants. I did for this swap, but not until after taking this pic.
Any feedback, positive or negative, would be greatly appreciated! Via PM or in this thread doesn't bother me. I'd just love some tips.
Edit to say, they'll ship Monday AM.
