For me, 'caught' is any fish I have to phsyically remove from the end of my line...ie. un-hooking. The only exception being any fish I've netted that spit the hook after it was in the net.

I think it depends on what your definition of 'IS', is!

For pete sake! Has the whole world gone mad?
You either hooked one, or you caught one, (which involves hooking one).
How can one say he 'caught' a fish if he can't show you the fish?
How did they come up with "catch and release" if there is nothing to release?
(caught being past tense verb of catch)

catch   /kætʃ/ Show Spelled
[kach] Show IPA
verb, caught, catch·ing, noun, adjective
–verb (used with object)

1. to seize or capture, especially after pursuit: to catch a criminal; to catch a runaway horse.

2. to trap or ensnare: to catch a fish.

If there is not a successful release or pan frying of the fish in question, then there was no successful catch or 'caught'.

Redefining words to suit ones own self interest, is postmodernism and 'relative truth' at it's best!.....Good luck with that.............

Fish in hand for me, I always say I got 9 of 14 (last trip to a pond) meaning I landed 9 but hooked up on 14. If he escapes my clutches then he gets to laugh at me and I think he deserves that right as he fooled me into thinking that I was going to be able to actually touch him. Just me though

Besides being funny, your statement hits the nail right on the head.

That's the best kind of humor!

I did enjoy the "long distance release" joke though!
