I'm just really getin' into this, but at last count I had 162 dries, wets, nymphs, streamers, and egg flies.(Yes, I carry egg flies, and no, I'm not ashamed).

Is 300 really all that many? I sometimes carry 500 in 5 smallish boxes. That is nearly every fly I own. There are good times to carry that many flies - if you are on a new stream, between distinctive seasons, far away from your vehicle, on a multi-day trip, etc. Though I rarely carry all my flies, I always carry more than I need. Mostly because I like to keep my boxes organized and hate to always be tearing them apart to put together a smaller version and then having to put them back later on. Also, it seems as though every time I take only 25 or 30 flies, I wish I had a few more, especially if I am in brushy water or nymphing in a rocky stream bed and might lose a few. I don't want that to happen again.

A few ounces of flies is worth a few pounds of fish in my eyes.

Hard question to answer so I said other, one box holds 40 large salmon flies, another holds 20 Lg & 30 medium, yet another holds 70 small & medium, plus it has compartments for loose flies.

Them come the wallets...............

I'm not sure if I own 50 yet. I have one small morell floating box with around 15ish flies. Now that I am looking at traveling a couple miles to fish, Instead of the river behind my house. I'm going to buy another box.

I try to limit myself to carrying one box. As I mentioned in another post, I have 161 flies in my general purpose box with room to spare. If I do my homework right, the right fly will be in that mix of 161.

As Hardyreels mentioned the number of flies will vary in regards to configuration. Since I have specialty boxes, my counts could vary from as little as 40 flies to 200 flies.

Since the original posts asks for averages, my guess is probably between 51 to 100.
