I have a size 3.5 and i really like it. It has the same drag as my litespeed and it works just as well. Best buy in the world of reels without a doubt.

I sure like mine and actually prefer the flat and shine less finish over the more expensive Guru. Of course the Guru is a tad lighter but after paying for it so is your wallet...

Konic 4 is also one of the few reels you can use HEAVY line on. I have an 11wt strung up with mine and it seems to be doing very well. I need some bigger carp to test mine out but so far so good.

how would you compare it to an allen alpha II? better or worse?

I have a #2 that I bought for my wife, and I love it... Anyone ever had one chip, gouge at all? I almost got me for my new BVK but a guy i trust at the local shop had some horror stories. He didn't seem to think much of anything cast, and I'll admit my Konic has not seen a ton of use, maybe just over a dozen days

The good thing is that the Konic is pressure cast instead of gravity cast. That means that there are less impurities in the aluminum. My ex-girlfriend has put well over 100 fishing days on her Konic 2. Her reel has a chip on it, but it is very superficial.

New to the forum and just getting back into fly fishing after a long hiatus.
Found some great deals and was thinking about pairing a Konic 2 with a Reddington CT 4865. Realizing that there are many variables, my question is about the proper line weight for all around purposes. Lamson suggests pairing with a 5 or 6 weight rod, with 6 wt line. I'm thinking I would be better a 5 wt line with an 8'6" 5 wt rod. Any thoughts or questions to help me decide? Thanks!

The CT in the 8'6" 5 weight configuration is a very moderate action rod. Overlining the rod with a 6 weight line will make the rod feel mushy. If you choose a Konic, go with a 5 weight line.

If you really want to go with a Konic, I would choose a Konic 1.5. I mounted a lined up Konic 2 on an 8'6" 5 CT, and the combination felt butt heavy. I'm not much of a stickler about rod and reel balance, but this outfit was way out of wack. Don't worry about backing capacity. How much backing do you really need for a 5 weight anyways? Yeah, really!

I tried overlining mine with a 6 and immediately changed to a 5. Dennis is right on once again . I overline almost all of my rods too...not this one. -Mike
