Default Leader Calculator program and tying your own leaders

Hi all ...

Anyone try this program and tie your own leaders ?

Looks interesting .. sure it would be esier to just go "BUY" leaders ready to go, but .... for those of us that can't control the urge to tinker and so on ...

I need a hobby like Fly Fishing or something.

Oh wait ...

Got a link to this program, Gordon? I love tinkering with leaders and can use all the external help I can get!

Yes I have and it's like everything else in fishing it's led by the needs of fisherman. If your needing more conrtol in what you fish with then by all means go on. Me I'm happy
now just buying my leaders already made up. There is such a thing as going to far. Think
of it you could rase your own bamboo, split it and create your own fly rod, make your own terminal tackle, tie the fly, hell even rase your own silkworms and make fly line. In the end what I'm trying say is total tech or carefree the important thing is to enjoy fishing.

I used to tie my own leaders. Now I furl my own leaders. Never looked back.

There is lots of information out there about furled/ furling your own.

This will give you a few hobbies--

The first will be making the jig.

secondly; the leaders, themselves.

There are plenty of 'formulas' readily available on the webbz, but experiment with your own step downs (tapers)-- you'll have a lot of fun.

I actually made a few leaders today. I didn't need them to fish with as they last a lifetime, but I just wanted to make some.

Just a quick google search returned this:

Hyper-Compleat Principles of Leader Design - The most comprehensive tool for calculating classical and contemporary leaders - and designing your own formulas for knotted leaders - Global FlyFisher

Hope this helps. It may be what you were already looking at--

Gordon,

The leadercalc program is great. It is easy to use and can be adjusted for length and use. I have used it off and on for 4 years and made my own adjustments as needed.

I only tie leaders for dry fly fishing as knotted leaders sometimes make changing depths with an indicator a pain in the butt.

It is very nice to tie leaders that actually match your fly line weight. Global Fly Fisher also gives some good advice on proportions and the percentages that are required to make the leader turn over well.

I've used it to tie a few leaders and the learning curve is barely a bump. If you have a tape measure and can tie a surgeon's knot, you can use this (a lot of people recommend the blood knot, but I'm to lazy for that.)

I haven't tried the leaders yet, because as soon as I finished a few the NE decided to get pounded with snowstorms, but I'm pretty excited to give them a whirl.
