Default Winter Itch

Thought I'd go out and try some fly-fishing in the lower Savage in Western Maryland Friday afternoon. It was supposed to be partly sunny and high around 40. Perfect maybe for a midge hatch? Wrong on the weather and wrong on the hatch! Cloudy and cold down there but went fishing anyways. Didn't catch anything but I just had an urge to try. Did get stopped by the Game Warden for a license check! He said he was surprised to see anyone out. Anyone else out there getting the urge?

Good to hear from you!

Did you fish wets and streamers? The weather you describe sounds like my kinda day for swimming some feather wings.

Yesterday was the first day all winter where the temperature was over 32* and it pored all day.
Driving home last night, one local trout stream had overflowed it's banks and was flowing over the road. Ice damn back-up at the bridge abutments.
We've had 8 feet of snow since Christmas.

Today was nice..... good day to shovel the roof and chip ice

I've been itching like crazy. I had promised the misses to take her and the kids shopping today earlier in the week and don't you know this is the first decent day we've had in about a month. Figures......

Well here in the mountains we are still facing 1 1/1 to 2 1/2 months of winter weather. We already have 330" of snow with an unknown amount still to come. This is a winter which started in late October. Yes I have the ITCH!!!

I'm hoping for some nice warm days in early and mid march to melt out the boat ramps so the floating can commence on the season opening April 1st. Till then I'll just lurk around here make my rod hand itch like crazy!!

Tied my first bead head midges today and went to the river with high hopes. Being new at this game every piece of fly fishing equipment owned is kept in a plastic bag.

After hanging up twice in the same tree, my afternoon on the river was short lived, forgot my tippet material and strike indicators...lol

Note to self: Go by a vest.

Got the urge today and headed for a warm water discharge where a powerplant's cooling water empties into the Ohio river.

River was up and the color of coffee with cream.
Made a few casts, snagged one gizzard shad.
Got my foot stuck in the mud on the bottom causing me to stumble and fill a hip boot with water.
Decided I'd had enough fun for one day and headed home.

Went fishing last weekend and the fishing was great. A lot of tailwater fishing in my part of the world. Can not say enough about tying your own flies (just started tying). You really have a chance to go into a situation better prepared. Big midge hatches and the right patterns in the right sizes really makes for a fun afternoon.
