It's easy to smush, but spread peanut butter or nutella on a tortilla, add a sprinkle of gorp, set a banana in there and roll it up. When I did a lot of endurance cycling, I responded better to real food than bars/gels so I tried a ton of different things. This was my favorite.

Home made Trail mix mixed with nuts, dried berries like cranberries, blueberries, etc. Plenty of carbs and protein, it keeps you going, especially during hard hikes in hot weather. I top that off with a good cigar to keep those pesky deerflies away. And I bring plenty of water.

I take some sort of compressed fruit bar for energy that I buy at a backpacking store and South Beach protein bars (I like peanut butter) for longer lasting sustanence. Combined with plenty of water, you can last all day.

Important: At the first sign of fatigue, eat something. You'll feel better and fish better. Often in the fun of fishing, you'll ignor your bodies needs. Experienced wilderness travelers train themselves not to do this.

Personally I am a GORP and peanut butter sandwich kind of guy. However, one of my best friends always brings smoked salmon, bagels, tomato, and avocado when we fish. He precuts the tomato and slices the avocado in half then cuts it into slices but leaves it in the skin so it doesn't mush. The salmon that comes in the vacuum sealed packages works great. It's way more than I personally want to organize or deal with when I am by myself, but I have to say, it sure tastes good sitting by a trout stream. We are going on Sunday and I am already looking forward to lunch.

"Gorp" was the name of the alien robot in the original classic "The Day the Earth Stood Still", who responded to commands like "LAKTU DICTA NICKTO" (or some such).

Seriously, its a mixture of dried fruit like raisins, nuts, seeds & other additives to suit your palate like granola, often carried in little plastic snack zip bags. Personally, I prefer something less healthy like pemmican.
