good first setup

I am getting redy to purchase my first rod and reel. I have decided not to get an outfit. I feel like I can put to gether a better quality rig myself if I spend a little more money and buy the rod and reel seperate.

At the moment I am leaning toward a 9' 5wt TFO Professional rod. and a TFO Prism reel. total cost w/ line is around $300.

can I do better in this price range?

There's a thread in the FAQ section on first rod and reel purchases. Click here for it.

The great thing about this time of year is that shops start discounting products that are slated to be discontinued. You can find good values. I know the popular Sage Launch is being discontinued. You could probably find a five weight discounted up to 30% off. I think the Redington SV reel is being discontinued, too.

Good luck with your search.

Edit: Orvis usually runs specials on its reels. Take a look at its website or one of its stores.
