Default Freshwater Mussels?

Hey all,
I am a student studying American freshwater mussels. I live in Massachusetts where unfortunately there are not that many mussels to find. I am looking for people who come across the little (sometime not so little) buggers when outdoors. I would love anyone who finds the muskrat/raccoon middens on the side of the rivers/lakes (or how ever they come across the mussels) to box up a bunch of paired fellas big or small and send them my way. I am only looking for spent/dead/empty shells, not live specimens. I collect and study and write about all the different species. I'm not concered about big or small, the more different species the more exciting to me. Anyone who would be able to help me with my studies by just picking up a bunch of the ones you find while fishing would be a HUGE help in my studies. I would certainly compensate you for your effort and of course pay for shipping too. The only requirements would be that you provide matching paired (not single) valves and that they are not totally broken (they don't have to be absolutely perfect with no chips at all, but the cleaner with their natural "skin" the better). I've been trying to make contacts with people across the country that naturally run into mussels while out fishing or hiking that might be able to just pick up shells they come across without it being a big hassle for them. I can't thank enough anyone who would consider assisting me with this project. You can contact me through this site or directly at kczaja@fas.harvard.edu. Thank You!!!!! And good fishing!!!
-Kevin

Well I figured I'd try to "bump" the discussion again. The studies continue and I'd appreciate any help anyone could give.
-Thanks again, Kevin

Well I'm in Texas and we had a bad drought this year that killed off a ton of mussels and these were not little guys either probably about 6 inches tip to tip. With the water levels now up to normal I don't know If I will find any but if I do I will be sure to send you a pm.

I'll probably be on the water early next week, and there's a couple nice streams in the northern Ozarks I'll pass by with serious mussel populations. I'll stop by a couple accesses and see if I can find anything for you.

Good luck with your research!

Hi Kevin,

If you had you bumped this on Monday (I hadn't seen the post till today) I would have gathered you some from the river I fished. The bi-valves are smaller there than in the still water out at the cabin but they were very plentiful along shore in the back eddies.

How long will this need exist? I ask because we are headed for freeze up in this region but in the spring I could send some specimens from Hewitt Lake Alaska where they get huge. There are obvious differences from watershed to watershed here and I had not given it much thought beyond the size thing. I will be continuing trout fishing until things get too icy and will pluck up any that I run across until then.

It would not hurt to send a PM to my box here with address info and the time window for getting some AK. samples to you.

Ard
