Default How can you tell what kind of flies you have?

I was given a box of assorted flies and I have no idea what's what.

If you have a local fly shop or a sporting goods that sells fly fishing stuff, visit it and show the sales guy your selection.

What MP said.
Or.....we might be able to tell you from pictures. It would be easier with reference numbers above the flies 1;2;3;etc.

Going to a fly shop would be a great idea, if not you could go online to the big retailers and match the flies to the pics if they are in there. If all else fails post them here like Jimmie said. Lots of knowledge on this forum to help.

You could use a catalog, Orvis, Cabela's, etc... Or the Umpqua fly encyclopedia. milt.

Where abouts did you get the box from? What part of the country?
