Default Re: Your Worst Day / Calamities While Fishing

here is mine...gonna be long

quite a few years ago i got my first boat. was pretty proud of it so on a 3 day memorial weekend my dad and i decided to take my boat and his little RV down to the James river arm of Tablerock lake. there is some great bass fishing up in the river. the little RV didnt have a big gas tank so we had to stop halfway there on the way down. we pull into this gas station and get out and dad goes in to use the restroom while im filling the RV up. i looked down jsut by chance and see a huge knot on one of the rear tires, dad came out and i pointed it out to him so we dicided to try a few places like wal mart on the way down to get a tire...no luck at all the whole way down there. it was kind of an odd size that no one kept in stock. so we get to the campsite and get the boat unloaded and it was pretty late by now so we decided to go into Branson the next morning to get a tire as one of the wal marts we had stopped at last told us the one in Branson had them and called to make sure and hold a pair of them for us. well that was a mistake, when we got into branson we had to go from one end of Branson to the other on a Memorial weekend with no air in the camper and it was in the high 90s that weekend. finally we get there and go back to the tire lube express and they get started on it..by now its almost 2pm so we have pretty much wasted our whole day on this deal...2 hours later they finally get 2 tires mounted and balanced on this thing and dad and myself are fuming cause its taken so long. we leave and find a little better way back with out so much traffic and finally got back to camp around 6pm so the whole day was shot.
the next day we wake up pretty early and jump in the boat and head out down river. my older brother and uncle were there camping with us and we find my uncle down river in a nice little small cove off of the main river about 2 miles down or so and hes crappie fishing. i proceed to pull out my 7' spinning rod and tie on a 7" ribbon tail worm with a 3'16 lead bullet sinker and start bass fishing. i make a bad cast and the worm lands up on the bank of the river about 2' out of the water, no big deal, so i start hopping the worm back down to get it in the water when it wraps around a small sapling that the line had went over that is about 3' tall and gets wrapped up pretty good. so i start yanking on the rod to free the worm when all of a sudden if comes free and shoots back at me at mach 100 and smacks me right in the eye, now at the time i wore glasses and had since i was in 6th grade. well it slammed into my glasses and shattered them (shatterproof glasses will break with enough force just so you all know) when it hit me i immeditaly dropped the rod on the front deck of the boat and went down to my knees holding my hand over my eye. my dad saw what had happend and went into freak out mode. he pulled out his knife and went to cutting fishing line as i had it wrapped all aound me and yanked the trolling motor up out of the water slamming it into the deck of the boat breaking the prop off. he hollered at my uncle who was around 30-40 yards away from us who heard the sinker hit my glasses and later said it sounded like a .22 going off. dad yelled at him and said i got hit in the eye and we were heading for the hospital as i couldnt see out of my right eye. we headed back up river as fast as my little 16' boat with a 40hp merc could take us which wasnt very fast. we got back to camp and dad liked to have beached the boat comming in at mach 10 we jumped out and dad ran for the camper to get it torn down and shut up so we could go. this whole time im wandering around holding my hand over my eye getting sick to my stomach with the pain and thoughts of what had just happend. at this particular campground at the time there were port a potties that had to have been 100 years old and were the nastiest thing on earth i had ever seen and no one ever went in them...well that day i did cause it was go in there or go in my drawers cause i was getting sick. i come out to the calls of my dad yelling and looking for me and ready to go. we get in the camper and start to leave and dad stopped to talk to the guy that ran the campground who he was good friends with and tell him what had happend and the guy said he would take my boat out with the tractor they use at the camp ground and take it back to his house so no one would mess with it and he would also tell my uncle and brother what was going on as my brother knew nothing about it at the time. so off we head to the hospital, i have never seen my dad drive that fast in my life he had the pedal down in the little RV and if he could have pushed it any further down i know he would have had it laying on the pavement if it would have got us there faster. we stopped at a gas station and dad ran in to ask where the nearest hospital was and they told him. so back on the dad express we go again and get to the hospital rush in through the emergency room and he tells them what is going on and they have me sit in the waiting room while dad is parking the camper. he comes back in about 5 minutes later and we sit there for what to me seemed like days but in reality was more like 30-45 minutes. at this time my dad is starting to get mad, now my dad was a small guy about 5'8" but was built like a bull from working hard his whole life and wasnt a guy to mess with if you got him mad, well with me waiting this long he was mad the longer we waited the redded his face got. next thing i know my dad walks up to the desk where the nurses are at and tells them my "son has probably just put his eye out, and we have been waiting to see a doctor for almost an hour and i have seen people go in with just coughs and cuts go in before us, if you dont get a doctor out here to see my son in the next 30 seconds im going to walk down that hall and grab the first person i see with a white coat on and drag him out here by his head, and if you think im kidding wait 30 seconds and see", the nurse gets up walks back there and within seconds a doctor comes out and gets me.
i walk back in the room with the doctor and sit down on the bed and i tell him what happened . he takes a look at my eye and then puts some stuff in it and turns the light off and turns on a blacklight, looks at my eye and tells the nurse to go get another Dr to take a look, next guy comes in same thing asks for another Dr. 3rd guy comes in and takes a look. and they all come to the conclusion that i have scratched my eye but they have an eye specialst on call that is there with another accident that they will have look at it to be sure. the specialist comes in and takes a look and right away asks the Drs if i am here with anyone and they tell him my dad is in the waiting room. sprcialist tells them to go get my dad and im about to freak thinking im loosing this eye. dad comes back there and the specialist tells them that i have puncured the outer portion of my eye with either the hook or a piece from my glasses. he asked me if i had ever had any kind of surgery and i said no never. he looked at me kind of funny and said how old are you, 22 i said, and you havent ever had surgery, nope never, well your getting ready to in about 20 minutes.
a few hours later when i woke up it was all done and pretty much over with and they had me fixed up. they ended up putting in 5 stiches in my eye and had them for 3 months. they told me that i would have the scar for life and probably have cararacts in that one eye by the time i was in my 30s due to it but i got lucky and got to keep my eye. they told me if it would have been 1mm lower that i would have seen the scar in my vision the rest of my life. it was hell of an ordeal had to be off of work for a week because i could lift anything and they told me if i ripped the stiches out there wouldnt be anything left to work with so i would loose the eye so i was real carefull with it and now wear contacts all the time and have better vision now than i have ever had with glasses.
te specialist had told me once that the only thing that actually saved my eye was when the sinker hit my glasses that it slowed down enough from the forse hitting my glasses that it didnt cause enough trauma to the eye to damage it bad enough, they still think that it was pointed part of the lense that broke that put the hole in my eye.

the moral to the story and a very hard lesson learned is always wear glasses when you are fishing. if something happens. you cant replace an eye...you got 2 take care of them.
sorry so long was a hell of a weekend and the worst fishing trip of my dads long life or mine so wanted to try and fit it all in

Mine is simply when I was fishing with my son and for some unknown reason the tip one the Sage 486 LL I used to own broke off. So far in over 25 years of fly fishing and over 40 years total fishing its the one and only rod I have ever had break. Then again when I was a little kid after my father first purchased his commercial fishing boat, I accidently dropped into the water next to where it was docked and lost it before I even got to use it once, funny I can still see it sinking to the bottom. This was the first time I went out commecial salmon fishing with my father. I don't remember my age, but I was quite young.

Hey Luked, what a story! Glad everything worked out and what could have been much a worse ending. How long ago was that and have you had any trouble with the eye since?

I'll make them short.

This year I was in a conoe and paddled to a fishing hole. Putting the Sage together, I dropped the tip section overboard. I grabbed for it and before I could blink, the canoe flipped. I lost about $500 worth of gear that day.

Then, about ten years ago, I went salt water fishing with brother-in-law. I caught the biggest Atlantic Croaker either of us had ever seen. Literally, I had to fold him to put him in a 48 quart ice chest. Brother-in-law keep all the fish, but when I got home, I got on the Internet and discovered the Croaker would best the State record by at least a pound or two. I ran to the phone, called brother-in-law and found that my trophy had already been filleted.

Fishing with grandpa about 40 years ago, I hooked a gator on an old fiberglass fly rod. He was probably about a 4 footer. Fought him a long time, but finally brought him to the boat. Being a naive kid, I reached for the hook and darn near got my hand bit off.

Finally, my son embedded about a 1/0 hook in my lower lip. Couldn't pull it out, so I had to push it through, clip off the barb, and slide it back out. It left a scar for many years.

Dude!

We have a thread just for the Croaker, it's called 'The I Wish I Had Known The Record Club' if you type that into the search box or just click on the General Discussion forum home page it is a Sticky there. Hard luck stories about what could have been record fish are there. You should put your croaker on the list, sorry to hear that one.

Now about the canoe...................I wish I had talked to you before you did that because when people ask about using a canoe I always say the same thing. "Don't take anything you wouldn't want to lose in a canoe".

The fly in the lip hurt all the way to AK.

Unhappy Re: Your Worst Day / Calamities While Fishing

I was catfishing one night last summer, and I was snagged. I recovered all the terminal tackle...that 2 oz sinker sailed at me about 60 mph, hitting my shinbone between my ankle and knee. I thought my leg was broke...I had to sit down for at least one hour. I'd hate to think what that sinker would have done if it traveled 8 inches higher...and possibly hit my knee.

I am grateful that sinker didn't hit the girlfriend, my neck, or my face!

Lesson learned: cut the line next time I get a snag while catfishing.

Flyfishing is far more safer for me!

Cheers,

Robert

I had a similar thing happen to me also while catfishing, but it was not snagged I hook into something big and was fighting it when about 20 feet out the line broke or so i thought at that moment, it was night at the time but I heard a wizz go by my head and a thud on a tree just behind me, the hook streightened out and the gear probley missed my head by inches,... never found out what I hooked but it was big something about catfishing hahah..

it could have been much much worse. the specialist that worked on me said there was a lady in there the week before me that the same thing had happend to and she did not wear glasses...she lost her eye because of it...was a valuable lesson learned for sure i never go with out glasses of some type any more and i never start yanking on something like that any more either.
havent ever had any more problems yet with my eye that was when i was 23 or so i cant remember and im 33 now and havent ever had a problem yet because of it thank god.
