Hello everyone,

I'm new to fly fishing, and I am unsure what size reel I should get for my 9/8 rod. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks!

I might be assuming you mean 9 foot 8 weight for 9/8. Or do you mean 9 or 8 weight? Anyways the answer will be the same. Most modern large arbor reels for 8 and 9 weights will have outside diameters anywhere between 3 3/4" to 4". For capacity, they will hold around 175 to 200 yards of 30 pound backing (up to 250 yards for a 9 weight).

Examples are:
Ross Momentum 4 and 5 (err towards the 4 for an 8 weight, err towards the 5 for a 9 weight)
Galvan Torque 8
Abel Super 8 LA and 9 LA
Bauer Rogue 4 and 5 (err towards the 4 for an 8 weight, err towards the 5 for a 9 weight)

There are a lot of good reels on the market. These are just a few.

I would recommend a pflueger medalist 1495 1/2. Say what you will but its probably the oldest reel still in production and has a track record that speaks for its self. That reel has probably landed more big fish than all of its competitors combined!

Hey Bruce, welcome to the site.

I don't have any experience with Voyager reels, but good luck with it.
