Default What Knot for tying leader to fly line?

What knot would you recommend for tying leader to fly line or does everyone use a tippet type insert?

I used a nail knot for the leader to fly line connection for years. Now I use a nail knot to connect a 8" piece of heavy mono with a perfection loop in the end and attach the leader to that with the loop to loop connection.

I nail knot a bit of amnesia to the line and do a lopp to loop connection. I like the amnesia because the red color can be used to help detect strikes.

Blood knot. More out of habit. I may give the loops a try.

Hi willcfish,

If you fly line has a loop on the end you can fasten your leader butt to the fly line with a loop to loop connection.

If your fly line doesn't have a loop you can add a very short piece of heavy mono or Amnesia to the end of the fly line using a Nail Knot. Then tie a Perfection Loop in the end of the heavy mono. Fasten the leader butt to the mono loop with a loop to loop connection.

You can add a loop to the end of the fly line in a few different ways. Here is a FAQ that shows one way you can add a loop to the end of the fly line. Here is a FAQ that shows how to fasten two loops together.

Frank

NAIL KNOT a 2 to 2 1/2 foot piece of .023 stiff mono (Maxima is good) to the fly line. Blood knot your leader to this. Forget the loops...cut 'em off. Just make sure this permanent butt section is larger in diameter than the butt section of your leader...check you leader specs! You'll turn over your leader much more efficiently with this arrangement. Touch it up with Knot-Sense if you like.
