Default I'm thinking of a 3rd rod!

If you had two rods between a 7'6" 3 wt and a 9'0" 6 wt, what weight and length would you get to compliment the two?

I'm swayed toward a longer 4 wt rod of 8'6" or 9'0" for lakes and ponds with sunfish, stocked trout etc.

I wish I had dilemmas like this at work.

I think you are on the right track with a 4 weight. A 5 weight can perform similarly to a 6 weight. A short 3 weight is a specialized tool, whereas, the 4 weight can be more general.

Yes, it is a good dilemma to have.

i just went out on a limb and bought a winston ascent 380-4. i absolutely love the rod, and when i paired it w/the allen alpha, its a truelly sweet combo.

I think it depends on the species that you're after and type of water that you'll be fishing, but for average sized trout I'll put in a vote for a 9'0" 4 wt. I have one that I use almost all the time now for dry fly fishing; my old 5 wts. are gathing dust!

If all you want is sissy trout and panfish, I'd go with the 9' 4 wt. But if you want to catch big, mean angry fish, go with a 9 weight.

Dave: I like your thinking, but for me it would be the 4 wt of 10 ft for a nice nymphing rod. You already have a small stream rod and a 9 ft 6 wt would work good for an all around rod.

I'll throw my hat into this ring with a nine ft, 4 wt or even that 10 ft 4 wt that Larry suggested. I had one of the old model Sage SP in a nine ft three weight but it easily handled a four wt line and unfortunately AI sold or traded it. Sure wished I had it back as it fit many bills where my 7'6" softer actioned three weight doesn't.

I think I like the idea of a 10' 4wt rod. How is the feel and action of a 4 wt rod that long?!?!

I guess I'm having trouble invisioning the cast with something over 9' with a light line...

I plan on pairing it with Allen's 3 -5 wt Trout Series reel. I have Allen's 3/4 wt Alpha reel I can try it with too.

As for the sissy pan and trout fish... Absolutely, I plan on catching many of 'em.
For the big, mean angry fish, I'll continue to challenge then with my 9' 6 wt.
