Default Someone, Please Help!!!!!

Spring is still a loooong way away--- my fly boxes are full, new leaders furled, rods cleaned and stored, line hung loosely, reels maintained....

What else to do? Tie for the sake of tying? clean the rods again?

gonna be a long winter....

One thing I do is join some of the fly swaps, keeps you busy over the winter and you get to see other patterns that you might not of thought of tying, or maybe get a good book on fly fishing.

Another option is to take a trip down here to Texas. Yesterday I was able to wet wade in the Brazos River below Possum Kingdom dam. I caught stocker trout on a dry fly, small bass and panfish on stripped nymphs. Overall, it was a nice day on the water. It is nice to be able to fish year round. Of course, during the summer I would much rather be up north somewhere when the thermometer is busting the 100 degree mark.

"line hung loosely"?....Do you strip the line from your reels over the winter? Have often wondered about doing that but have never asked the question.

Another idea I had is try to take in one of the fly fishing shows if you live close enough to one of the stops on the circuit.

Is this the voice of experience speaking, Chris?

Swaps are a good idea--- my only reservation is whether my flies are up to standards.... I can catch fish on flies that I've tied, but some of the pics I've seen that you all produce are works of art..... Nor do I tie anything ground breaking-- basic recipes with a few variations.

Hi raindogt,

Don't worry about the quality of the flies for a swap. There are tiers of all levels in the swaps. Most members tie flies that catch fish and that is great for the swaps. Being in a swap will really help you increase your quality. Lots can be learned from a swap.

You do see some tiers show extraordinary abilities but those are the exceptions and most of the flies in a swap will be fishing flies.

Frank
