Default Smallmouth bass combo?

I have a nephew who has expresses an interest in flyfishing for smallmouth bass.
He live near the New River on the VA. NC border. What would be a good starter combo for him?

I agree. The 690-4s from this series- Fly Rods, Essence FS - Ross Reels USA / Ross Worldwide

Paired with this reel would work well- Deals on the Fly | Fly fishing deals so good, you will feel like you stole it! (FlyStart 3)

9x6 is the answer here. Perfect for smallies, trout, and useful for steel...what more is there?

I started out with a 9' 6-7 weight rod, but lined for 6wt. Worked great for small mouth with poppers, but not too big for trout.

Depends on the fllies he will throw. Small poppers will work well as well as non or lightly weighted streamers. I use a 5, but I have for years. I've learned what weight streamers and what size pppers worked best that I tie. Tight lines...Mike

The nine ft six weight is one of the most recommended by the experts just as was the 7 and even an eight weight years back. Todays six is a great rod for casting small poppers and flies of the Smallmouth variety.
