Default Loisiana Redfish trip

I just talked to my guide in Venice, Louisiana. I have a trip booked for the third week of June to flyfish for Redfish. I asked him about the oil spill taking place right now, and he said that it looks bad. Is anybody close to that area that can shed some more light on the potential tragedy? I am thinking about canceling my trip.

Obviously I am a science teacher....I can't spell Louisiana!

I can't offer anything other than what you have seen on the news already, and it doesn't look good for LA (my way of getting around the spelling issue).
If you end up cancelling your trip, you might want to read this thread as a possible alternative: Orlando Florida Report 4/27/10

What Larry said. The next two or three weeks should tell the story. If the wind comes out of the west, the oil could easily wind up on our west coast and miss Lousiana and Alabama all together. It is all up to which way the wind blows.

It certainly won't hit Florida's east coast though, and the Mosquito Lagoon area is a premier spot for reds. The guides are generally less expensive there than many areas, as are accomodations as well.

So don't rule out redfishing altogether no matter which way the wind blows.

Cheers,
Jim

Thanks Larry. I have relatives in the Tampa area. I may have to go sponge off them for a week this summer!

New Smyrna is right in the heart of redfish country. But mid-summer is not the best time for them though you will no doubt catch some smaller ones.
