Default Tippet Size / Hook Size

I have read that you can under size or over size the tippet size by one hook size as per charts and it will not effect the presentation of the fly. I'm asking because someone gave me some flies that are one size under the chart size (4,6,8) these flies are #10. Is this right or should I buy the right tippet size ? Just hate to spend the money on more tippet and leader for a few flies.

I have never followed charts. I would keep it simple.
Big flies - big tippets
Small flies - small tippets

^^^What MP said, plus bigger tippets won't fit through the eye of the tiny flies.

>>There is an easy system that will provide a guideline for the size of tippet to use depending on the size of the fly you are using. Divide the fly size by 4, and then add 1. If you are using a size 16, 16 divided by 4 plus one equals 5. Therefore 5X tippet material suits a size 16 hook. Some suggest just dividing the hook size by 3 and you'll get a similar number. 16 divided by 3 is close enough to 5<<

this might help why suddenly since I've started using furled leaders, some of my flies get knots in the tippet, big fluffy ones, good link, thanks
