Default What type of knot should I have from the backing to the leader?

I have just gotten my first fly set up. What kind of knot needs to be used from the backing line to the fly line? Also, Is it important on what type of knot is used to tie the backing to the reel?
I am going to the Hiwassee River in Southern Tennessee for my first fly fishing outing. I would appreciate any advice.
Thanks
Chad

Chig,
It's pretty easy to attack the backing to the line. There are several knots that you can use. The first is the Nail Knot, second the Albright knot, third the Duncan Loop. Any of these should work. I normally use the Nail or the Duncan Loop. To attach backing to the reel, you could use either the Duncan Loop or the Arbor Knot. I normally use the Arbor Knot because that's what I use on my other reels. Here are some sights for these knots, and other knots also.

I'm glad to see someone else fishes the Hiwassee too! I was begining to think I was the only one who fished that river! If you ever want a fishing partner shoot me a PM. Hope all this helps.
Aaron

ps I've had some good luck with a Royal Wulf, Black Wooly, and a BH Prince on the river recently.

As far as attaching your backing to your reel, this is the most popular:
Backing to Fly Reel

I have a different style where I wrap the backing around the reel twice, then make a loop on my left hand fingers, pass the tag through two or three times and then tighten.

As for attaching the line to the backing. I use a nail knot (which requires the tool on the suggested post, but can be done without tool, but a lot harder.
Or loop the line and the backing for a loop to loop connection. This will allowe you to switch out line easily.

Good evening. Just joined the forum. Chig, I'd use the Albright knot. I've never had problems with it. Hope this helps. Silver Doc

thanks silver,
i am new to fly fishing and new to the forum. i used the albright knot and then later in my trip, my buddy encouraged me to put the loop system on, he also walked me through that. But he told me, that he was happy that I learned the albright knot in case of a pinch.
thanks for the advice
