I was just looking at 3wt's on ebay. some amazing deals there; saw a 7' greys setup for $125 that looked pretty nice.

I've never fished below a 5wt (but I've had 4 of them). I held a friend's 3wt the other day, now I want one... Very delicate.

I wouldnt be too worried. i've beat my 7' 3wt pretty hard a few times and its fine.
