Default Heading to Jackson, WY where to fish?

Heading to Jackson to fish, hang out, think of skiing and to drink beer . The Snake River is obvious but I'm guessing probably pretty crowded. Any ideas of other places to go. Not sure if I will have a car but I will have my mtn. bike.

Hello Neptune,

I've only been there once - late May-early June last year - but there are a ton of places to fish, although I don't know how far you'd want to travel on a bike. Distances can stretch out pretty far even if you just remain in "The Hole" (as the Snake River valley in which Jackson is situated is locally known). The best fly shop I found there for local advice on places and what flies to fish was Will Dornan's Snake River Angler located in Moose, which is about 11 miles north of Jackson in or near Grand Teton National Park. Of the several current hot spots they suggested, I caught the largest trout I had ever caught - an 18+" Cutthroat - on a dry they suggested, wading in a stream feeding into Jenny Lake (which they recommended), which is a moderately-sized lake part of the Snake River system.

A really great online source for fishing conditions in the Jackson area is High Country Flies [http://www.highcountryflies.com/] located right in Jackson (although I didn't know of them until after my trip or I would have visited their shop).

Hope you have as great a time as I did up there last year. Don't tell my wife, but I'd rather have gone back there this year again than take the Alaskan cruise (with flyfishing shore excursion) we took this year for our 20th anniversary! Catching the Cutthroat was more fun than the much larger Salmon I caught on Alaska's White River.

I think you'll be able to find some space on the Snake. If you're looking for complete seclusion, maybe not, but you'll have plenty of space to fish.

I was just through there two weeks ago. The snake was very busy in the Jackson area with river raft runners. Some of the locals told me that they fly fish on kayaks in that area. It enable them to get away from the rafters and to get into some good fishy areas. If you can get north into the south part of Yellowstone there are some good areas which were not getting pressured. To name a few: Lewis River/ Snake River/ Nez Perce Creek and Nez Perce Ford. Good Luck
