Surfin the Susquehanna is on a distinguished road
Default Guppies

I had a starange experience last night while fishing a lake near my house. I went out about an hour before sunset and figured I'd have some fun with the bluegills for an hour or so. I caught a small bluegill on my first cast... fly wasn't on the water for more than 3 seconds. Next cast, same thing. Keep in mind these are 4 inch gills, nothing exciting. I am new to the sport, so I am trying to get some casting experience as well as have some fun getting used to the strike and setting the hook. The odd thing is, after those first 2 strikes, everything went quiet for a while. Then all of a sudden, I started seing surface swirls EVERYWHERE.... looked like a rainstorm. I thought.. OH BOY, this is my time. Well I proceeded to miss about a half dozen strikes, cast after cast. Finally I landed one, it was a 1 1/2 inch baby bass. I caught another on the next cast. And then started missing again. Seemed something swirled around my fly on every cast but nothing would BITE. Is this typical that these mini, guppy like fish go into surface feeding frenzy just after sunset?

Hi Surfin the Susquehanna,

You could have a couple of thing going on. There could have been a hatch of some king on the water that this babies were feeding on. I think there is a good chance that under the water below these babies were some bigger bass or blue gill feeding on them. Next time this happens try using a sinking fly or streamer and see what happens.
