Question How long do you fight them ?

Good day to All,

I will be heading out for a one day float trip this
Saturday after Skmania Steelhead. I was just curious
as to how many of you have ever tackled these fighters ?
When you get a good hook set typically how long do you
play these "chrome rockets" ? From what I've been able to
find on the internet they jump alot more & like bigger type flies.

Any fly suggestions ??

Always in the water,
Tie One On

I never fished for the crome rockets but as with any fish, you shouldn't fight them any longer then nessary to land them and return them to the water if your not keeping them. Over playing a fish on under sized tackle can really stress them out and kill them.

Hi tie one on,

The trick to landing Steelhead is to use gear heavy enough to handle them. I would use at least an 8wt rod. Steelhead is one of the fish that a good drag is worth the money. Play the fish from the reel as quickly as you can get it on the reel. Use shorter leaders and heavy tippets. Keep your hooks sharp and use a strip strike. You should be fishing the bottom and the rocks can dull your hook.

Here is a link to an earlier post about Steelhead. Scan down to my post and it shows my three favorite Steelhead flies. Go to this site and you can see a good selection of Steelhead flies. The local fly shop can tell you what is hot.
