Default Tonkin Cane Fly Rod ??

I have my fathers fly rod which is marked Genuine Tonkin Cane, Horrocks IB Boston Co Utica NY. The model appears to be the Governor. It is a 9’ rod with an extra tip and the original rod sack. It is marked “weight approximately 5 oz”. I know that this is not a high dollar rod but I am interested in any information that I can obtain on this rod. Is this a split bamboo rod? I looked at it this afternoon and I could not see any seams in the rod but I am not familiar with “cane rods” and their construction.

thanks

jlb

Its split cane so long as its a hex, penta, or quad. Every now and then people find rods built by HI, Montague, and few others that are of really high quality. Some say they would turn out a higher end rod just to show they could do it and others say the higher end built rods were a custom order. Being able to see the seams or glue lines all depends on the glue used at that time. Some used Resorcinol that will show a slight wine or even a black color, other earlier makers used glues made from animal fats. I'm no expert on this stuff and sorry if I come off like one. I've only just started to wet my feet so to speak.

If you're interested in the cane rods then there's a book that will answer many of your questions. "Casting a Spell" by George Black. This will tell ya who, what, and where. Good luck.
