Mouse Fly, Ever use one ??

Have you ever tried a "Mouse" type pattern ?
If so, what fish did you target ?

Tried one the other day, that I was given long time back, but
never used & had tremendous results with Smallmouth. It was
a little Deer Hair type with a leather shoe lace tail. The Smallie
I hooked just nailed it hard.

Does anyone have any good typed up pattern for these ? Or
do you know a good website that may show step-by-step
photos with instructions ? I've not had a lot of tying time
doing Deer Hair flies.

Any good stories or patterns out there ?

I've never fished an actual mouse fly, but I used to fish dark Dahlberg's with a long rabbit strip tail all the time at night. That's pretty close to being a mouse pattern. Not sure I know of any fly that will get hit that hard.

The hair mouse is a great big fish pattern. They are popular in Alaska for monster trout and pike. They are also used in Michigan for night fishing. Here is a link to how to tye one.

Thanks for the pattern, I've printed it out.

Not sure if I'll get to try them for smallies until next spring.
The smallie fishing is beginning to wind-down here in Michigan &
I'll be concentrating on steelhead & salmon real soon.

The mouse is also a great for large mouth bass. Work it in and around structure like lily pads or submerged brush and the like.
Just like with small mouth bass it will be heart stopping slammed!

I use the mouse pattern on farm ponds and it can be a killer...Large blue gill and bass will try to distroy it.. It takes a good rod to cast it well.. ml
