Colorado DOW recently released some brood stock into the Blue River creating a fantastic opportunity to catch some 20+ in fish. The DOW does this frequently with older fish that they no longer are using in the hatcheries; but usually drop them off in the greater Denver metro area and usually into lakes or reservoirs as put and takes. I think it's great that they decided to put them in the Blue since it's a fly and lure and catch and release only Gold Medal River, ensuring that these brutes will be around to be caught multiple times and even help increase the naturally spawning population of rainbows in the Blue River.

That's a great post vitesse304. I grew up in the mountains in Colorado. I used to fish the Blue a lot when I lived in Dillon. By the way, how long has the Blue been catch and release?

I honestly don't know how long ago they designated the stretch just below Dillon as catch and release/fly lure only, but I've been fishing it for the last 8 years and it's always been that way.

Between Silverthorne and Green Mountain, it is also fly/lure only, but there is a two trout limit, 16 in.

I used to drive down through Vail pass fairly often to fish the Blue and help deplete the stock at the Moosejaws afterwards. One of my best catches was at the Moosejaws too, a lithe nimble ....

That's the first time I've seen tagging like that on fish, pretty interesting way to mark the fish, and definitely a neat opportunity!
