Default Equipment and supplies

I want to add fly fishing products into my store. For someone just starting into this venture what would be the basic items I would need to bring in, to get someone started in to fly fishing. This would be from the rod and reel up. Thank you for your time. Any and every reply would be very much appreciated.

That's a tough one. The most successful fly shops I've been in and frequent are ones where the owner is a dedicated fly fisherman himself. The owners knowledge of fly fishing and the local waters set them apart from the general retail operations that just do it as a sideline. Short of that, visit a shop that specializes in fly fishing in your local area and take a look around.

St. Croix sells some combo's that include rod, reel, line, backing, leader, and a carrying case ....... blah blah, on second thought, I looked it up, and they cut the case out of the deal. Here is another option that looks like a much better value- Temple Fork Outfitters NXT Outfits.

In addition to that, I would stock some multi fly packs that have an assortment of "western trout flies" or something like that. You'll also need to stock leaders, tippet, split shot, and indicators, hemostats, and some other oft needed items.

The thing about fly gear is, just to have a "small" selection you can get up to 500 SKU's real quick.

Thank you Cliff, the info about leaders, tippets, split shot, etc. That is the type of information I am really looking for. If you or anyone else has anymore ideas on the small items like these I would appreciate their info. I noticed tippets, leaders are sized. Any recommendations for small stream or river trout? Thanks again for your time. Steve

Stevieb,

Your best bet would be to find a vendor and talk to a rep. They can help you with what is best for your area. Start with your current fishing vendors to see if they can give you fly fishing info or if they can recommend a fly fishing vendor. If needed do Google searches or check industry mags to find other vendors.

For your area, leaders and tippets in size 3x-6x will be needed. Shot sizes will range from BB to 6. Indicators will range from pumpkin seed size to thumbnail size, roughly.

I would suggest seeking out Umpqua, Rio, and Scientific Anglers for a source of leader's and tippets, in that order. Preferences from other's may vary.
