Default Fly fishing gear for Silver and Pink Salmon (Alaska)

Hi !

I plan a trip in august 2013 for Alaska, and I want to buy a rod+reel and line combo.

I saw this one at Cabel'as Cabela's: Cabela's LSi/RLS Combo

In 9'9 8 Wt. The reel RLS look also good. Any advice for a reasonable price salmon outfit for Alaska ?

And for the line, I need a floating and sinking line I suppose.

Thancks for the answer.

Ben

I do not know about salmon, or the rod you are purchasing, but I do have the RLS II reel, which is a 5/6 wt. I love it.

Ben,
Ard has posted a lot of info in the 'Alaska Forum' that should help you plan for your trip. I need to start studying myself for our trip this August.

Hi Ben,
I will not comment on rods, but I will comment on lines.

When I used to work in the fly fishing retail industry, I would have customers come in with lists that were provided by their Alaskan outfitters. These outfitters recommended that their clients would take a multi-tip line setup like Rio's VersiTip line. That way the angler would just change out the removable tip for different depths. More recently, the outfitters have been recommending sinking leaders like Rio's VersiLeaders.

Hi Ben,

Not very familiar with that area, but from what I see of it I would either be using a sink tip line or floating line with a floro leader depending on the water. For pink salmon I generally use a 6 weight, for silver I like an 8, it makes it much easier to control those energetic runners.

I haven't tried the Rio versitips, but the Cabelas brand one I had I wasn't too fond of. It wouldn't cast well with some of the tips on it. It was fine for close in work but I couldn't get much distance out of it.

Thancks for messages guys !

Yes, The versitips look a good option, 3 lines on one, and no need to bring reel spools.

Rio is the only brand who propose this kind of fly lines ?
