Default First day out with a Fly Rod

Well my son and I went to the Orvis 101 class on Sat. very informative. Monday we stopped back at Orvis and the guy who taught the class gave us some pointers on smallmouth. We drove down to the DuPage river and wet waded. As we were getting ready a forest preserve police officer checked my license then gave us some specific holes to try. The water was like a warm swimming pool in spots and very clear. We managed a couple dink bluegill and my son caught a small 7-9" smallmouth. I did not manage a bass but my son caught his on a clouser minnow I tied. White with a sharpie black back. I would say we are hooked. My son changed first and when I came back from changing my son asked me if it was bad to get a leech on you he then opened his hand and showed me a small leech he had removed from his foot. He was not in the least bit worried or scared. So we are hooked. The little monster and my wife and dtr are leaving for Costa Rica soon and will be gone for a while. He is looking forward to going again when he gets back. I will go a few more times while he is gone. This is a great site and I am learning a lot. Thanks to all of you.

They are going I am staying home for the month. I found out that in the 50's or so some of the US military planted rainbows in some of the rivers that were cold and oxygenated to support them and they are thriving. When I get there i will try both salt water and trout fishing in Central America. I have to stay home as I am starting a new job/career. I have been a paramedic for, lets leave it at A LONG time, I finished my BSN so I am starting a job working in a ER as a nurse. No vacation this year but a lot more money to pay bills and maybe get more toys!
