Default Ever happen to you?

Today I went to my usual spot just to get a quick session in. I was there for 20 minutes when I reeled in a sheepshead (freshwater one). When i went to get the hook out, I realized the fishes scales were coming off in my hand. I always wet my hands before handling the fish so i can imagine it was from improper handling. Was it sick? I can't imagine this is normal.

I almost always wet my hands myself and this has happened 2-3 times with stripers back home in California, I just assume that they are a sickly fish. If its just one I wouldn't worry about it.
