IMO, I'd go with a 2wt DT line. The 2wt will feel like a want, so you'l almost be flicking it when casting. The rod will literally do all of the work. That length should do some nice roll casting in tight quarters.

Oh, and an Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock I will do nicely.

Axle, thanks for your comments. The Battenkill Bar Stock was the reel I had about settled on,,and I think you cinched it for me.

I am SO anxious to try this outfit out on our small mountain trout streams.

And , all of you,,thank you so much for your advice, tips and encouragement.

I'll post a report after I use this outfit some this fall.

Michael

I say go for it. I am using a #5 wt. Sage. But it fishes like a much lighter rod. It is 7'6" and weighs only 2 5/8 oz. feather lite. And great for the small rivers and streams. The lighter the better. You may not have to go all the way to a 2 weight to get the same ultra lite experience.

I don't know, the difference between my 3wt and 2wt is significant.

Agreed. It just seems there are some real lite rods being built now that have the feel and sensitivity of lighter rods. I guess a 2 wt is prolly very very lite. How many oz's is your 2 wt?

Congrats on the 2wt. They are a lot of fun to fish on small streams when all you want to do is present small flies to small fish an feel every bit of it. I have an 8'2" Sage SPL. I don't fish it much, but when I do I just love it. I casts like a dream.

I use my 17 year old Orivs Battenkill 3/4 on my 4WT and have a spare spool for the 2WT. I used to think I needed a little tiny small reel for it, but that was more me just buying into all the advertising. I balances well enough.

You probably should cast a WF line and DT. You won't be casting very far and so if you get a WF line, it should have a pretty short head on it. The problem with WF tapers for short casts is that you don't ever get enough line out to actually get the weight forward taper out far enough to take advantage of it, rather it inhibits your close casting.

My rod does best in the 20-30 foot range with flies no bigger than #12. A bushy #12 is actually a little too much. You'll want to find a good leader that matches up with the line size better than a standard off the shelf tapered leader. Checkout a furled leader from Cutthroat Leaders or find a good knotted leader.

But don't worry about it too much, we all like to talk and advise, but really you just need to take it out catch some fish. You'll get a feel for it and hopefully fall in love with it.

So could a 2 wt keep a 2 pound trout from running under the log? I'm trying to get an idea of the upper limits of your 2 wt. It's starting to sound like a lot of fun.

Not likely. It would be pretty difficult to stop or turn a trout that size if it was on a run. But who knows?
