Re: Fly Fishing with Hank.
Pretty good Denis,
The whole thing reminded me to tie some of my 'go to flies' and that alone made me smile. I've actually opened the box to find that I had precious few of what I knew would work, so what's that say about me??
I met a 'fly fishing guide' who had 3 clients in his boat a few years back. He walked up the shoreline of the large island where he had his guys fishing the downstream point to where I was at about 70 yards above them. His rod (and it was a nice one) was rigged with enough lead to anchor my boat along with a bobber and 2 plastic beads meant to mimic salmon eggs. We chatted for a bit and he ask how I had done that day. I told him and he ask what I was using. In reply I lifted my rod & twisted it to reveal a Santiam Spectrum (a Spey style streamer fly) parked on my hook keeper. The guide looked at the fly and said, "what's that". I said, "it's a streamer fly" to which he replied, "you mean you catch fish on those"? Now I'm not saying that just because you don't know a Spectrum from a Gray Ghost that you don't know how to catch fish but I was hoping for a little more savvy from a river guide. Hank would fit in fine on some of the rivers I've fished. I could go at length about having fellas like Hank bringing their people in on top of me where I was fishing also. Some people find fish by watching for someone who is catching them............
