I like a reel that really freewheels when taking line in. With them you can slap the spool to get the line it far more quickly than cranking it in.
If the fish is real close when he takes it's also usually fresh and hot. You don't have much choice but to use your fingers to snub the line against the rod until you get things somewhat under control before bothering to get it on the reel. Do what you have to to get things in order and the fish in some sort of control then get him on the reel.
It's quite a dance but just another in a long list of reasons that this here hobby of ours is so much fun.
