I will get out some older fly line and see how much heat actually needs to be applied to melt or affect the line coating....I could possibly introduce a microfiliment that heats the guides to 40-50 degrees thus keeping the ice from forming in the guides; could possibly work as long as it doesn't get too hot and doesn't melt/deform/affect the line....the next problem is creating a way to manage the heating system without losing the flexability and sensitivity of the rod....great post...thanks

Rednc, maybe you could get a thin strip of the film Nanosolar produces (Nanosolar SolarPly http://www.nanosolar.com/products.htm ) and attach that to the back of the rod to provide a power source for a guide heating/warming system. You would probably only want the panel on the butt section of the rod, given that it flexes much less during the casting stroke.

OOH, or you could use a long thin strip and diagonally wrap it around the blank. This would allow for flex and pick up sunlight reflected off the water/snow's surface.

This idea may seem far-fetched, but I bet such a rig will be out within the next 20 years.

I'd rather hunt fish than bait deer any day.
