Default Rod Weight Versus Casting Distance

Been cruising thru the Search feature and having trouble finding what I'm looking for. Thinking about picking up a ultra-light in the 7' length range and don't have a local fly shop with enough variety to do any testing. So to help shorten the search time was wondering if anyone can give some guidance on approximate casting distance for each of the ultra-light sizes.

Casting distance measured from your big toe...

Dave

If you got the rod you were watching, that thing should make a 78' cast with a single back cast in between presentations. It should do that with very minimal effort.

Did you get it?

It was a 5 wt far and fine, also interested in some shorter rods from 1 to 3 wt and want to know realistic casting distances for each of them.

You may have a new neighbor by next summer.

I've been doing quite a bit of rod watching on the fleabay ... and I've seen a few pretty nice rods in the 7'6" 3wt with good "buy it now" prices. Aslo some nice 4 and 5wts.

But I'd have no way of telling you how far a rod can cast. It's rather dependant on the caster. And hell, Dave, if you're moved in by next summer the streams you'll be fishing with your 3wt are only 30' across anyway, at least the ones I'm thinking of.

Very true. You can take one rod and ten casters and get 10 different distances. Probably ten different excuses on why they aren't the same distance.

You guys are slipperier than snot on a crystal door knob, so this is what happens when I take a year off from fishing to work!!!

Dean: Typically, how far would you expect yourself to cast a 1 wt and then again a 3 wt?

Dan, would ask you the same but I suspect other than a broom, your haven't held a stick less than 12' long in years...
