There were some nice shots in it. Didn't quite live up to the book though the story is complex enough to be tough to film. I heard there was disagreement between the filmmakers and Duncan.

That's my memory too. Any book based on 'fishing' has been a tough nut to crack and get right on film.

I agree that it is worth watching. FWIW it's on Netflix.

There was a lot of strange moments in it. Overall I felt it was more focused on one anglers quest to find himself than the actual fishing aspect of it. There were a lot of good moments but quite a few that just didn't seem to fit in with the overall film. He does tie a mean extended body dry fly.

I watched it one night on the netflix stream. I was actually shocked when I saw that it was a movie and I'd never heard of it ... and the David James Duncan would do it. As it turned out he did not allow his name to be attached to the film. He lives up the road btw and I've heard him read many times. Great guy, amazing writer and thinker.

Get the book! Wonderful book, it changed me when I read it in my early 20's. I think it helped push me out West. River Teeth is another excellent book of essays on fishing by Duncan. Then there is the Brother's K. Wow!

Wasn't that impressed with The River Why. I thought the story was odd. I did enjoy the fishing footage.

The fishing footage from Salmon Fishing in the Yemen was a joke. I was more on board with the storyline, but not the acting.

God Laughs and Plays is a great one too. He's a very creative writer. Read the River Why a couple times and listened to it multiple times when I had a long commute around Detroit.
