There were some seriously nice fish in that group. While carp might not be the prettiest fish in the bunch, they do fight like a freakin Gorilla with a capital G. They are a smart and and leary fish. Not a fish to be looked down on.

Now if we were going for pretty, that Red Band Steelhead the girl had, that would have been my vote. For both the angler and the fish.

Dan, I couldn't agree more! In fact one could argue that virtually any of those huge fish should be fish of the year. Sure happy were able to help John push through to the finish.

Grats John. A well deserved honor for you as you are one of the carp on the fly trail blazers.

A carp isnt going to win any beauty contests against a big Bull, bright chrome Steelhead or beautiful Permit, they do have a certain something about them.

Lots of complaining from the comments section. Some just cant appreciate what goes into catching a carp on the fly. I like to think of your victory as a mission statement that carp on the fly has arrived as a serious fly fishing target species.

Glad you won ! Think that will silence the haters a bit at least until next year! Every fish was incredible so it's cool to see that monster get all those votes! Shows that people are learning that fly fishing isn't just about trout!
To me the most incredible fish of the year didn't even win for the month. It was a Huge Halibut not only an incredible catch due to the size but the difficulty in getting the doormat to take a fly! Congrats Man!'
