Default Re: Fly Rod Tip Stiffness and Tippet Breakage

I bought a sage one last year because it cast great in the parking lot and I got a great deal on it. It was my first fast action rod, as i have only used SPs, LLs or bamboo. I then took it out fishing for the first time and proceeded to break off my first three hook ups. I sold the rod the next day. So, yes, they don't protect tippets as well, just like anything that gives more. It's pure physics. So I would say that if you're used to slower rods, there will be a learning curve. But, I will also say that it is as much operator error, as in my case, as physics. It is really a case of teaching old dogs new tricks. I knew exactly the amount of pressure to use in a hook set with my SPs. That same pressure on a hook set broke tippets with the One. Just my .02
