I tie my thread around both tag ends of the mono by the hook eye, then I burn the mono tip to create a little ball. This balled end can't fit back through the threat surrounding the rest of the mono.

I tie all my bass bugs with weed-guards; single strand of #20 Mason hard mono. I can't imagine fishing without them on the California Delta, my home water. Too much weed growth and you have to put that fly into some very heavy cover. I had a great day out last year pulling flies over the top of thick algae mats, no way you could do that w/o weedless flies. Do I lose fish because of the weed-guard? Maybe, I don't know how to tell. I lose a bunch of fish, many times they are hooked and I play them for awhile and lose them. I have attributed that more to barbless hooks and poorly hooked fish, but who knows?? Great question.
