Not the same
The modern Eagleclaws aren't nearly as good as the vintage Wright&McGills

Still not the same.....the Eagle claw rods have a butt over tip ferrule which makes for a stiff butt and soft tip. They're okay but don't cast nearly as well at the vintage Wright&McGills.... I've had both.

I have a 7' 6'' echo carbon 3wt. They are not bad priced and it is a great small creek rod.

I like my st croix avid 6ft 3wt for bushwhacking. It's black and does the job. I haven't broke it so far. Medium action rod for about $230.

Guys, he's looking for a short 4 or 5wt. Not a 3.

I am with Mojo when he says fiberglass. For the type of fishing you are describing, a Steffen would be perfect, and right in your price range too! Give fiberglass a try, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. This is not your grandpas glass!
