Fly vests became over-engineered over the years
My 30+ year old LLBean vest has all of 7 pockets including the big one in the back.... and I always leave one of those empty just for a bandana.

Somewhere recently I saw one of those lumbar back support belts with a water bottle holster and thought it would make a dandy "3in1" wading belt.

I have a Hodgman Fly Fishing Vest.

I think it cost in the $60.00 price range, and I love it.

It's older, and don't even know if they make it anymore.

I saw a newer Hodgman, and its is just a copy of the Simms G3 or something close to it.

My vest has a lot going for it. Huge storage pockets at bottom Right and Left front. Lots of little pockets.

Also, it is Made of Gore-Tex and Nylong mesh.

I would rather not pay over about $100.00 for any vest.

They are rather like a Fly Box. You can pay $40.00 for one, or get one the same size for $10.00 That will last as along.

What I look for is Gore-Tex and Nylon and Polyester. If it's Cotton Fabric, I won't buy it.

I also like vests with a large zippered pocket on the right and left front. Little pockets won't hold anything but teeny fly boxes.
Large pockets can be stuffed with all kinds of gear.

.

That said, if a fellow has the money for a $200 fishing vest, they should get the best they can and be proud of it.

Anyway, here is a long list of vests for comparison: http://www.bizrate.com/fishing-gear/...fishing-vests/

. I just want utility.

Hey Casey:

That's a good looking vest. So what is the Brand?

================================================== ===================

Some have recommended the SIMMS G3:

Simms G3 Guide Vests

Simms G3 Guide Vests are Simms' most technical, highest capacity vest, with twenty-two pockets so you won’t have to decide what to take or leave behind. These vests feature stretch panels and a padded breathable collar for all-day comfort on the water. The 2 Patented built-in retractors and magnetic docking station keep tools in a handy location. G3 Guide vests are perfect for the angler who needs to bring along a large volume of gear.

Standard features of the Simms G3 Guide Vest includes: •22 Pockets including 4 easy-loading, patent pending molded foam pockets
•Shoulder feature stretch panels and polyester mesh for comfort and ventilation
•Breathable padded collar
•Center-front nylon zipper
•Patented built-in retractors with magnetic docking station
•Thermolaminated tippet pockets with zipper closure
•Hook & loop rod holder closure with rod butt loop
•Super durable nylon woven fabric with DuPont Teflon water repellent finish
•Imported
We offer the Simms G3 Guide Vest in men's sizes Small through XX-Large. This vest comes in Gunmetal and Khaki colors. Imported.

My Opinion? Well worth the money. This is a "loaded" vest, capable of hauling a lot of gear.

The Patagonia guide water vest is great for me as I like a streamlined vest without a bunch of protruding pockets. I also like the fact that the vest has vertical zippered pockets to fit my large fly boxes.

I went with the G3 Guide vest after looking at reviews. In my case I felt like spending the money for the vest would be worth it in the long run. So far the simms gear I own has been worth the money.

I looked over that vest and it does look like a really good one. Lot's of pocket space there. Very good recommendation.

After three vests I thought it might be time to try the Orvis Guide Sling. A nice change in gear, it works well. It gives me enough room and freedom of movement. Worth the extra $$

Have Columbia vest for 20+ years and has worked great. Just got a Orvis Clearwater vest for summer, very nice $60.00.
