Default Ever have a reel freeze?

I went fishing in the Rockies yesterday and I had a bit of a problem with my reel. I got a good sized rainbow and managed to land it. But after that whenever I hooked a fish the reel would either go so slack so that the line would just wind off the reel, or with one turn of the drag wheel it would totally freeze up not letting any line out at all. Needless to say I lost every fish I hooked after that because I couldn't control the line.

It's a disc drag reel and has been pretty smooth. Once I got it home it seems just fine. The only thing I can think is that I got some water in there and it froze somehow?

Is that a thing? Does that happen to reels in really cold weather?

I've had it happen on my Allen reels a couple of times.

OK good to know. Where does it freeze? Like behind the disc? Or in the bearings?

In the bearings. Is your reel also an Allen?

I cleaned it and it started working again, but it was a pretty frustrating thing to have happen 4 river-miles from the truck.

No it's a generic sorta knock off thing I got for $50. It's closer to a Ross design. It's been a good reel. Never had a problem until yesterday.

Yep. On the North Platte last November-ish on my Guru. Froze between the spool and frame and constantly had to be breaking it loose.

I had one just do the free spool thing for about 6 or 8 turns once. It was about 25 or a bit less and the reel was wet. I have never had it happen again. I assume it was an icing problem. I have never had one lock up on me. That would suck really bad.

Poke 'Em, I would be happy to take a look at reel. That's an issue we seldom run into. I'd like to not have that happen again to you. If you can send the reel in please let me know. Please email me at info@allenflyfishing.com

bassguitarplayer - I know you don't have our reel. But, I have parts for a lot of reels. I'd be happy to take a look at your reel and see if one of our bearings or several others parts that i have will work in your reel to prevent you from having future issues. If this is something you would like. Please feel free to send me an email at info@allenflyfishing.com for an address to send the reel into.

Thanks

Justin

Justin makes it might hard for me to not own an Allen rod or reel. Might just have to add a Kraken to the line up just because this kind of customer service is unheard of. Looking at a non-Allen reel? Nicely played!

I've never had a reel freeze and don't mean to Hijack the thread, but Allen's customer service and advice from the sales staff is the exact reason I'll be purchasing Allen 8wt and 10wt setups for my move to Houston. A small company that goes out of their way for their clients, makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
